Drowning is the number one cause of death for children ages 1–4.

Black people under 30 have a 1.5x higher drowning rate than their White counterparts.

Black children aged 10-14 years drown in swimming pools at a rate 7.6 times higher than White children.

55% of U.S. adults have never taken a swimming lesson. Among Black adults, 63% have never taken a swim lesson. The number rises to 72% among Hispanic adults.

In 2023, USA Swimming (the National Governing Body for the sport of swimming in the U.S.) reported that out of their 334,995 athletes, only 2.1% were Black.
